Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made his first official visit to Serbia on August 7–8, where he met Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. Both countries want to deepen economic cooperation and prepare a free-trade agreement by the end of 2026. Serbia also pledged further humanitarian and reconstruction assistance to Ukraine.

At the same time, Serbia maintains close relations with Russia and has not joined EU sanctions against Moscow. In July, Vučić was the only participant at a Ukraine–Southeast Europe summit in Kyiv who declined to sign the joint declaration calling for continued support for Ukraine and greater pressure on Russia. Serbia nevertheless supplies weapons to Ukraine, although Belgrade does not officially acknowledge this.

During the Belgrade meeting, Vučić said Serbia supports Ukraine's territorial integrity and thanked Ukraine for supporting Serbia's territorial integrity. Ukraine does not recognize Kosovo's independence and maintains that position partly because it does not want to create a precedent that could be used to justify Russia's claims over Ukrainian territories, including Crimea and parts of the Donbas.
