Vincent Price

"...The midnight hour is close at hand", heh, heh! Been away from the paints too long so I've had good fun (for the most part) wacking down some real colours to try and capture the great face of Vincent Price - who's looking suitably horrified at the impudence of this caricature artist. The reference image was quite low-res - without any discernable fine details - and so forced me to keep the brush marks real loose. Close up, the result is pretty impressionistic but that's no bad thing.

Created the main image of Pelé a while ago and uploaded with a different setting...which I never really liked; but couldn't come up with anything better at the time. Seeing as all eyes are on Brazil for the 2014 soccer world cup, I thought it would be a good time to revise it and reload it! I much prefer these colours.

Have been really enjoying the third series of Stewart Lee's comedy vehicle, so it was good fun to morph what has been called by The Times "the face of the decade". Mr Lee doesn't tickle the funny bone, rather he gives it a rude kicking and then glowers at it. Tried my best to get the caricature as spot on as his observations. Looking forward to a fourth series...

Sad to hear this morning of the death of Junior Murvin. Like everyone else with working ear drums, I love his collab with Lee Perry on Police and Thieves, but his other songs are well worth checking out as well. If you like his falsetto delivery and LSP's Black Ark production then I recommend his first album - also titled 'Police and Thieves' - as a good entry point to his catalogue. Roots Train is a cracking opener...

Got about 50% through this with everything going great when the computer crashed. I always save as I go along but this time the computer acted weird and I'd somehow managed to save the file with the image half off the edge of the drawing area, thus cropping John's face. Useless! Nothing worse than starting over when you felt you'd nailed the original, as you never think you can replicate it - let alone getting back the wasted time. Oh well, I'm quite happy with version two (which somewhat lessens the pain!) but I could've done without it.

Here's a fairly quick re-working of an old pencil sketch of Hollywood fav' Mr Jack Lemmon. I wanted to do a b&w painting just to concentrate on form and shade. There wasn't a lot of detail in the reference photo so I had to fill in the blanks. It's very rare I do a side-on portrait and, like anything, it's tricky if you're not used to it - you have to go about things in a slightly different way... good fun.
